Please note that these pages will be updated with more information and possible other competition parts until the competition is officially declared closed.

Welcome to the "Alien Life" animation competition page. Largely inspired by our BOINC heritage and the recent NASA sponsored research findings at Lake Mono, this animation competition is open between the 6th of December 2010 and the 31st of January 2011 (closing time at 11PM CET+1). A special gallery page has been set up for the competition entries. This competition is graciously sponsored by Laurea University of Applied Sciences and it's Service Innovation and Design campus.

Participation rules and prizes

In order to take part in the competition, the animation must be rendered successfully on Renderfarm.fi and must have the tag "Alien Life" written clearly somewhere in its description field. All animations of at least 25 frames or more that are uploaded before the deadline, meet the normal terms of use / policy for rendering on Renderfarm.fi and have a minimum of ten votes are applicable for prizes.

The top ten entries will receive prizes. Prizes include five copies of the "Essential Blender" book by Roland Hess and five authentic Renderfarm.fi T-shirts with the top placed entries having the possibility to choose which to take. The overall winning entry will also win a copy of the Blender Foundation's "Chaos & Evolutions" training DVD by Sintel's Art Director David Revoy. If the winning entry cannot be sufficiently decided by difference in votes, the organizer will hold a separate draw between all applicable entries.

Voting and winners

Voting is done using the five-star widget found on each session's page. Voting opens immediately and closes no less than 72 hours after the final competition entry has completed rendering. Only registered users can vote. Each user is only allowed to vote once per animation. One additional winner will be picked from the sessions receiving the most Facebook "likes" using the widget found on that session's page. Normal service policies and terms of use apply. Renderfarm.fi does not take any responsibility for errors in rendering that could affect the voting results. Rules are subject to change at any time.

Competition Gallery

Click on a title or thumbnail to watch, review and comment an animation. All animations have been rendered using Renderfarm.fi. Please take note that the animations shown are really only the previews of the actual frames. Renderfarm.fi enables its users to render higher quality than they normally would be able to without the use of a costly commercial renderfarms. In order to download the actual high resolution .PNG frames of an animation hosted in the gallery, you will want to download the CATS program.
