How to approach companies and universities with Renderfarm.fi
Submitted by prodigal_son on Wed, 2009-06-03 19:58I am currently working on how to best get in touch with companies and universities in order to get them interested to start using/teaching Blender and joining Renderfarm.fi. My current vision about this is that we need to get Finnish universities to understand the value of a volunteer-based renderfarm for student use. If were able to get 50-100 computers per linked university to contribute to the service, we would have huge capability for classwork.
Imagine being a student in a university that teaches Blender. It's thursday, you boot up your computer, continue on the animation that you've been making for the last two weeks - an animation that you need to have full rendered by next monday in order to return it in time to get your course credit. In this alternative reality (that doesn't necessarily need to be so), after finishing your modelling work, instead of putting down the resolution and rendering on the single computer (still waiting the whole day and hoping it doesn't start crashing), you fire up a simple script in Blender, check your .blend settings and hit upload. You then proceed to go out for a beer with your student friends, later checking that the work has been accepted by the staff at Renderfarm.fi (or other BURP service).
The coming monday you just download the files or even just point to the ready render on the server in your email to your teacher.
I would really respect any comments made by the users. What do you think?
