Renderfarm.fi presentation from 9th Annual Blender Conference is online
Submitted by prodigal_son on Sun, 2010-11-28 01:27I was delighted to notice that the Blender Foundation put up the rest of the presentations from the 9th Annual Blender Conference this week. I personally think that the conference was not only of the hiqhest possible level presentation wise, but also had the most amazing atmosphere and fun bunch of people I've had the chance to meet in one place. I thoroughly recommend that anybody who's interested in Blender take part in next years 10th Annual Blender Conference.
Sunday's presentations included a presentation of Renderfarm.fi and BURP by me and Nathan Letwory. From our part I think we did a good job of representing the service and the technology to very knowledgeable audience. As stated in the presentation, the next big step in the evolution of the service will include setting up a confidential rendering service (important: we will not use any of your volunteer computing resources, but will have dedicated resources available to us) that will be based on an almost identical open source architecture as the current service. With this we aim to keep Renderfarm.fi free forever and still maintain the possibility to develop the technology making up the service.
Finally, we're also still looking for one or two universities willing to parcitipate in a pilot that aims at providing lecturers education in both using Blender (priority number one, for obvious reasons) and Renderfarm.fi (priority number two) in full courses. This is a good opportunity for any university lecturers out there (almost regardless of where you come from) to get using Blender in your courses. That said, I hope you guys enjoy the presentation - any feedback and discussion is very much valued!

Assembly 2009 is over, so how was it?
Submitted by prodigal_son on Mon, 2009-08-10 11:52
It's monday and time to get back to the normal routines (although I'm personally off for vacations now). I thought I'd sum up my personal experiences about Assembly 2009 in my blog just fast.
All in all the fair went really well and personally I had a blast. My last visit to the happening had been 12 years ago, in 1997, and I was really surprised how fun the event still was - especially if you feel you can contribute to the cause in some way.
I was greatly helped by all the enthusiastic people from the Laurea SIDLabs and all the Blender knowledgeable guys from the IRC channel #blender.fi. All in all I reckon we got about 300-400 visitors to the stand during the long weekend, some stayed for more, some for less, but most - I think - got to understand what the service is about. We got some 70 participants to the competition for the t-shirts and Blender Essentials -book. The winners have been all notified by email and/or by phone.
A more detailed post about the proceedings at the happening will be following, but I thought I'd post a couple of pics just as a "teaser". All photos in this post courtesy of Hege.

PS. With the success of the Assembly 2009 participation, we will be checking out the possibility to participate at the AltParty also. What do you think?
Cheers,
Julius
