Uploading work to Renderfarm.fi

I decided to write a post about our policies for accepting work. Especially after the outpour of interest hailing from the article on Blendernation (thanks to them, we received about four times the amount of visitors of an average day), it's important that everybody takes note of our policies. The policies are here basically to protect the users from unnecessary overhead of computing resources from unnecessary renders such as animated (or even better, non-animated) default cube #29393. This is to say anything that could actually be rendered faster on a local computer shouldn't be put to the users here.

We completely agree that each user should be able to test how the service works for them, but we would rather that people test the service by uploading meaningful material that follow at least the following set of policies (more on these here):

  • Only users can upload
  • For rendering, we currently support Blender version 2.5A2
  • Sessions with short render time will be rejected. 'Short' is typically less than 50 seconds per frame, depending on the number of frames and the size of the file. Generally, the larger the file size the longer your sessions need time to render
  • If you post animation, please make sure that the animation works on your computer before posting it to Renderfarm.fi. A scene that shows the same frame over and over again is not considered an animation in this regard (unless you have a valid point to make, that is;)
  • Projects rendered on Renderfarm.fi can be used commercially as long as the appropriate licenses are used
  • Most importantly, please be mindful of the fact that you are using other people's computers to finish your render - the least you can do is to respect them by giving some of your own computing time to the network

Some sessions can be accepted even if all of these criteria are not met (for reasons such as them being very interesting technological tests or potential eye-candy for all participants), but mostly sessions that don't fit the criteria will be refused. We do this only because we believe it is in the best interest of everybody sharing their resources. Remember - because of everybody participating, we have the potential to do some wild stuff visually. Think out of the box (or cube, pun intended).

Meanwhile, I would like to express happiness in the way people have found us and joined up during the last few weeks. I think we've gotten plenty of nice things to render and to show in the gallery. Thanks all!

People have not received notifications on rejection reasons

Yesterday we discovered that people have not been receiving the reasons why their sessions were not accepted. We apologize for this oversight and will aim at fixing this ASAP (read: now).

Thanks

Thanks for the post. I was getting frustrated with the black frames and 1000 frames of the same thing. I figured you weren't rejecting anything.

I was about to say something, but didn't want to sound like a troll. I guess I got spoiled when I joined to render sauna cabin (http://www.renderfarm.fi/session.php?id=195).

Keep up the good work!
