I have to start my story some years before I went serious with CG. I've been producing music and playing musical instruments at that time a lot. It was only a spare time activity, but I put some effort and money in it, writing lyrics, producing songs, buying hard- and software (like cubase) and even going to a studio to master my stuff and record stuff with other people.
My productions got better over time, and I thought "Now it's the time to get some money back from that". Long story short: that never happened. At that time I was pretty critical to licencing like Creative Commons, I wanted my copyright on all of my productions, always thinking, some day someone will buy at least one song and then it will start rollin. I quit doing music a while ago, you may recognize why. :D
But I carried on my licencing attitude into the CG sector at the beginning. Platforms like Turbosquid (which I still use) invite you to upload every 3D model you create, and maybe get some bucks out of it. For sure, that bucks only come out if you don't distribute your stuff freely under CC. I kept that licencing model (copyright, it's all mine, MINE!!!) when creating still images I published on the interwebs. At some point of time, my long-year colleague and friend Sven Dännart / www.medievalworlds.com, who was far ahead of me, in terms of producing quality CG, asked me:
"Do you know, how many images I soled yet?"
Me: "No.."
He: "None.".
I had to make up my mind. I was living the popstar-dream, and while doing it I overlooked that there are 7 Billion other people on this planet, and I wasn't that exceptional artist I wished to be. Media had fooled me into thinking the road to success is an easy and short one, and everybody can make it. But the opposite is the truth. People like my friend Sven Dännart, who by now actually gets money out of his still images are working unbelievably hard, like the people you see on the CD cover of your favourite band. They are working 24/7, improving their skills and quality every single day, and some don't even have a "real life" beyond that. Media also fooled me into thinking, copyright is a good thing, that will pay back the artist for the work he did. Here again, the opposite is true. Copyright was blocking me not only from seeing the truth of my own situation and advancing, but also blocking me in every project I made. 10 years ago it was very very hard to find good free samples for your song, or free textures for your scene. Everyone went the copyright way. I'm happy these times are changing.
Today I try to licence more or less everything I can under CC-BY. And I gained from it a lot. Since I do that there are people coming along like: "Hey, can we use that image for our publication?" and I answer "Sure, please include either my name and/or my website". This is ready cash. Advertising is expensive, and this is free advertising.
I want to encourage everybody to try the CC way, make the life of every artist easier and gain from it. Remember, licencing something by CC can always be reverted, so if at some point of time you think over your decision, you can do so.
