Sculpting a Male Human Bust in Blender

Thu, 2012-05-17 19:13
Hello and welcome to this video tutorial on Sculpting a Human Bust in Blender!

In this Blender tutorial by Kent Trammell you’ll be introduced to a basic sculpting workflow for creating a human bust. The final result of the tutorial is shown below.

What you’ll learn:

Starting with a simple base mesh, you’ll learn to shape form and anatomy with an artistic perspective in Blender’s Sculpt Mode with brushes like Grab, Draw, Inflate, Pinch, and Crease.  The majority of the sculpting is done symmetrically.  Towards the end of the sculpt we’ll pose the torso easily in Edit Mode with the proportional editing tool, while maintaining the sculpted detail in the Multiresolution modifier.

If you’re not familiar with Blender’s sculpting system then I recommend you check out our Introduction Blender’s Sculpting System video. It is slightly out of date now, but most of the content is still relavant.

Fri, 2012-05-11 16:00
Hello and welcome to this Blender tutorial series on creating an island environment in Blender 2.6!

In this three-part tutorial series by David Ward you will be taken through the complete process of creating a tropical, island environment in Blender 2.6. With David’s guidance you will go from a barren landscape to the lush, final result that you see below in just about three hours.

What you’ll learn:

Through this tutorial you will learn how to use the ANT Landscape Generator add-on to create the landscape, how to use the OceanSim modifier, how to make easy trees and vegetation with alpha-mapped textures, how to populate your vegetation with particle systems, and you will learn how to create easy procedural rocks with a displacement texture and modifier. You will also be taken through the steps needed to composite the final render together, including add depth to the horizon, adding the clouds background and much more.

BMesh modeling system

This is the long-awaited modeling system overhaul that has been in development for many years. Bmesh brings a much less destructive, streamlined modeling workflow that will let you model faster than ever before in Blender. Along with a better modeling surface under the surface; Bmesh also brings about many new modeling tools:

  • Full NGon support for faces with more than four vertices
  • Bevel tool for creating rounded corners
  • Inset tool for easy detailing
  • Bridge tool for connecting two edgeloops
  • Dissolve for removing geometry without altering the surface
  • Knife topology tool for easily cutting in new geometry
  • Vertex Connect tool for connecting vertices with edges without needing to remove the faces first
Cycles improvements

Blender 2.63 brings along many improvements to the Cycles render engine that help to make it a true, production-ready render engine. Cycles continues to get better and better and is maturing at an alarming rate. This release includes:

  • Ambient occlusion support and render layer pass
  • Shadow pass for render layers
  • Integrator clamp option for noise and firefly reduction
Various features and improvements

Beside the major BMesh and Cycles improvements, Blender 2.63 also includes numerous small improvements and over 150 bug fixes! Some of these improvements include:

  • Modifiers: Strength slider for the Lattice modifier, coded by our very own Patrick Boelens!
  • Sculpting: mesh hiding support, allowing you to hide/unhide parts of your mesh while sculpting
  • Sculpting: Clay strips brush for easy surface sketching
  • Compositing: detach operator to disconnect a node from all others while maintaining original links. Use with ALT + D
  • Compositing: improved File Output node with multiple input/output support
  • Interface: various improvements, including icons for Vertex/Face normals display and a menu for delete in the toolbar
Even more! For the complete list of additions and fixes check the Blender 2.63 Release Logs

Learning Mesh Topology Collection

Sun, 2012-04-01 02:55
Hello and welcome to this collection of topology videos on understanding mesh topology for modeling!

Mesh topology is arguably the single most important aspect to a high-quality model in many different areas. No matter whether you’re preparing a model for animation, modeling clean hard surfaces, making an organic model with smooth curves, or simply modeling something that is easy for other artists to work with, topology is key to each of these.

What is topology?

Topology refers to the structure of your mesh and the way the mesh flows around the surface and details of your model. Due to the complex nature of topology, truly understanding it and grasping how to create clean, effective topology for your models, of all subjects, can not only be daunting but also very challenging. Historically there have been only a few tutorials scattered across the web that really delve into understanding topology. We wish to change that.

Starting a while ago, Jonathan Williamson began producing Topology Overview videos here on Blender Cookie that attempted to demystify topology for everyone. Each of the videos have been very well received and so we have gathered each of those videos, along with our other various topology videos here on a single page; giving you a one-stop place to learn topology.

Jonathan is a self-professed topology snob and has made topology a strong focus for everything he does. He has given many lectures on topology and constantly works to help make topology easier to understand and learn.
